Why do you not use adjustable shoulder straps? Most swiftwater rescue PFD’s are outfitted with Quick Release Blow-out Belts. It is critical the QR Belts be placed in the correct position to optimize the “current to body vector” while performing tethered rescues. By incorporating adjustable shoulder straps you run the serious risk of compromising this ratio if improperly worn. As a professional it is critical that the PFD you wear fits correctly. Professionals do not lend out their safety gear. When you order a North Water Rescue PFD it is built to fit you.
What size do I need to buy if I am wearing thermal protective gear? That will depend on the volume of thermal layering you wear. We tackle this in two ways. Firstly, you will need to know what size of PFD to use. Our Team Sizing Chart will help solve this issue. Secondly, you are able to use the same PFD with thermal layering because we offer our Chest Expander- a girth widener that allows for flexibility of up to 2.5” in expansion to accommodate seasonal thermal protection layering as well as personal weight fluctuation.
Why are your rescue PFD’s more expensive than other manufactures? North Water PFD’s are in a class unto themselves. We do not build PFD’s for the mass market.
NW PFD’s are built for Police, Fire Departments, Search & Rescue Members, Military and other Professional and Para-Professional moving water emergency response organizations. As a result they are built to a much higher standard than all other PFD’s, just as a Military Hummer is built to a much higher standard than a consumer built Hummer.
On average a consumer brand PFD will be used a few days out of the year. They are not subjected to the abuses of rescue work and with regular use will require replacement every 3-5 years. We have had products in the field for over 10 years that are used daily, year after year. Spreading the initial cost over a 7-10 year life span makes NW PFD’s a much better value than related brands.
We use only the highest quality NAFTA Certified fabrics, webbing, foam, threads and buckles. All stress points are re-enforced using 42 stitch-count bar-tacks. Every stitch is inspected and every lot number is tested and we do not build to minimum standards. We never compromise quality and function because of cost. We have a dedicated team of experts in all areas of testing, manufacturing, sales and management.
Can I return it if it does not fit me?
Yes. Fit is extremely important in moving and white water environments. Many of our customers operate jet boats so the fit needs to withstand not only high speed, body to water impacts but high volume rivers, strong currents, and aerated water.
What is an Extrication Line?
An Extrication Line is a product North Water developed as a result of Rescue instructors wanting a product where a rescue rope could be thrown to a rescuer or victim trapped mid river. Once clipping the rope into the Extrication Line it allowed much greater diversity in which to carry out the rescue.
How do I know which sizes will fit my team? We will forward you a Team Sizing form to record measurements for each team member and the type of thermal wear and/or body protection you require. From there we will ship the correct sizes. If a custom build is required we will do this at no additional charge.
How do you handle warranty work? Each PFD we ship has been inspected and built to specifications that have been proven in the field for many years in a wide variety of environments. Out of the thousands of PFD’s sold, we have never had one fail. They are occasionally returned for repairs. In the event your PFD is damaged we want to hear about it regardless of why it happened. We pride ourselves in looking after our customers.
How do I care for my PFD? • Clean of any salt, sand and grit with fresh water.
• Do not store in damp conditions
• Inspect all components for damage before and after use
• Do not abuse or apply undue stress
• Periodically coat carabineer with silicone or lithium based lubricant after it is clean and dry
• Periodical apply UV inhibitor to exterior shell
• Do not expose to long hours of direct sunlight
• Identify your name and in-service date on product label
How long will my PFD last? Commercial rafting guides have used some of our PFD’s for over 10 years. That being said, the nature of all flotation is such that over time the buoyancy factor becomes compromised. Although this is normal, we recommend you periodically perform tests to determine if the product continues to meet your requirements. In normal use we have complete confidence the exterior shell will stand up for many years beyond the functional life of the flotation. However, we have no control over the environmental, chemical and care conditions your PFD receives. We recommend daily evaluation prior to use. The average lifespan of our vests will be between seven and ten years. We have many pieces in the field used by professional’s day in and day out for more than 10 years. Use your PFD with care, and treat it with the respect it deserves.
